Loomis Study- Comic Heads using the Ball and Plane Technique

This page focused on applying that ball and plane technique onto some comic heads. I might follow Loomis' advice on revisiting these exercises as I'm not happy with how these heads came out. They look at bit abstract for my liking.

Loomis Study- Several Face Studies

From Left to Right: Mongoloid; Widedome

From Left to Right: Pinhead; Negroid

From Left to Right: Extendback; Highdome
I was productive today by finishing off that page of heads from that Loomis book.

Life Drawing, and Some Profile Studies

From Left to Right: Lowback; Flatback
I haven't been that productive with my drawing during the past couple of days. My life drawing seemed rushed, and I felt that I was copying rather then learning from the Loomis book

Loomis Study- Several Face Profile Studies

From Left to Right: Bulgybrow; Highback

From Left to Right: Dishface; Weakface
I think I did well on these studies from that Loomis book. But my head do look a bit squashed, but I am able to get similar marks to make the faces as in the book, which is some kind of improvement.

Loomis Study- Studies on Lowbrow and Squarehead Faces

These are some further studies on some faces. You're meant to use the ball and plane technique, but I found it easier to learn their construction in your own way to make sense of the relevant proportions.

Loomis Study- Several Face Studies

Left to right: Wide Face; Pointed Face

Left to right: Flaring Jaw; Wide Cheekbones
I was a bit more productive when studying these face types today. Although I will revist the Wide Cheekbones face to make sure that that sinks in.

Loomis Study- Long Face

I'm now on a page which features all these different head types. In theory I am meant to apply the ball and plane technique when studying these head types, but sometimes it helps to apply the construction thoroughly by your own means along with that technique.

Loomis Study- Batch of Heads Using Ball and Plane Method

Spent the past few days trying to work on these heads that Loomis illustrated with some theory behind this method. It took me a while to work out how to draw that baby head, but I can now progress onto the next page, which featured his theory being applied to different head types.

2 Drawings... Studied from the Same Head

It took me twice to apply Loomis' ball and plane technique onto this particular. The above picture may be loosely done, but it's more faithful to the original than my first attempt.
See?

Doodles, Life Drawing, and a Skull

I thought I group a eclectic bunch of drawings together in one post. So above was I life sketch I did yesterday, focusing on some bikes being locked up on a fence of a tree.

Today, I was applying the ball and plane technique from Loomis on a skull. It worked out okay, although not too distinctive as a skull, but I was able to apply the technique well enough that I might progress onto the next page of the book.

And these are some doodles I did earlier in the week. I seemed to have King Rollo on the mind when doodling that day.

Loomis Study- The Ball and Plane Method- Applying the Theory...Much Better!

I am eventually learning the process behind this methodology of drawing faces. I do have some doodles to upload on the blog, but they just need to be scanned.

Loomis Study- The Ball and Plane Method- Applying the Theory

I was able to study the actual head face-on in the book, but I will need some work to master the profile view, using this theory.

Loomis Study- The Ball and Plane Method

This was some of my drawing trying to understand Loomis' method on drawing heads with his ball and plane technique. It might take me a while to fully take it all in.
