Artober 2020- Day 15- Joker Study (90 Minute Art Challenge)

 It's back just in time for #Artober it's the latest #90MinuteArtChallenge with Bobby Chiu and Masae Seki doing their pieces live in Magma Studio. I might join them using that program as I feel my study from Joker is very similar to the last time I did such pieces. Oh well, let me know what you think.

Artober 2020- Day 4- Captain Scarlet Study

 

Just stumbled on someone sharing the illustrations from Ron Embleton that were used for the outro to the cult classic TV show, Captain Scarlet. So I decided to do a quick pencil study. Not something you can knock something in 10 or 20 minutes, but it was good to study such images that I remember fondly from watching this excellent series many years ago.

Artober 2020- Day 3- Navy Seal Study

 

Yeah, this is a pencil study to help me get some detail for my next Storyboard Challenge, which I started tackling on Day 1. Found a pretty good image to study so I just did this quick sketch.

Artober 2020- Day 2- Pencil Study of Mouth Dreams Album Cover

 I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to be doing a pencil study of an album today. 

Yeah, it's from the album cover for an album called Mouth Dreams from Neil Cicierega (it's online if you're curious to hear it), but I was just drawn to its cover with a figure on its side on a pillow. I didn't get much time to do much with it, but you get the gist of what's going on here.

Inktober- Day 31- Study of Pinnochio's Coachman

Today wasn't the best day for me to try and study a scene from Disney's Pinnochio, as discussed in a tweet from Joey Waggoner. I didn't have much time to do, but I did say I wanted to try and study other artwork, but maybe THAT smile from that film's Coachman was an ambitious task.

Inktober- Day 28- Fon Fon Cover Study and Life Drawing

Managed to do a few pieces yesterday, with a study of a vintage magazine cover, titled Fon Fon, that a good Facebook friend shared the other day. I need to do more studies of other people's works just to fully understand how they are doing things on a constructional level, such the foldings on Father Christmas' sleeves.
The life drawing, en route to Oxford for another meeting followed by some open mic antics, is pretty good. 

Inktober- Day 19- MORE Life Drawings

This time, I think the smaller-nib piece was the more successful piece this time around.

Inktober- Day 16- Comic Colouring and Life Drawings.

Wow! I had a productive, and I'm liking what the marks are making that I did doing some life drawings today. The comic is for a potential paid assignment, hence the censored faces.

Inktober- Day 15- Life Drawings

I'm quite liking the marks I'm making when I do life drawing on the buses with this dual-head brush pen. I quite like the marks with the smaller nibs on this study.

Inktober- Day 11- SuperMarioLand Meme Study

You've seen that meme featuring that vintage photo of an adult playing a Gameboy with children surrounding them? Well, they said it looked like a renaissance painting... and well my study ain't like that! 

Inktober- Day 20- Tonal Study?

After an emotional exhaustive day, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to, or should, attempt something for Inktober. I decided to finish off another sketchbook (this one I have been using for over 4 years!) with a tonal study from a photograph. I think if I was to something tonal like this, I would've invested in some different shades of grey markers to get some depth, rather than that dramatic black for all the folds in the clothes, as well as the lighting around the neck and face of this figure. I can now start on a sketchbook, which I have been using for just exercises from a Brothers McLeod book recently, and fill that with some life drawings from time to time, as I am now got 9 more days of Inktober left. 

OxGrowArts Workshop Pieces- 22nd June 2017

After hesitating until the last minute, I decided to go to this Painting and Drawing Workshop organised by OxGrowArts, situated at Hogacre Common Eco Park in Oxford. Here are the drawings I made there, sit intact in my sketchbook before they are removed and framed for their exhibition at the end of July next month.

My first piece was probably my most successful piece from that workshop, calling it Flower Study. Basically, this is a still-life study of some flowers that feature some buds flowering more than others do. I just love how I went on a journey with my brush pen, getting lost in the detail of all those negative spaces and shapes this flower was making. I am not an expert in flowers, but it gave a pink/purple flower when the bud was in bloom. I was advised to try out adding some colour. Therefore, I did...

... In addition, this happened! I loved the shape this 'vegetable' was making with its leaves. I wanted to get the shapes that the leaves were forming. However, acrylic paint was not behaving the way I wanted to do. Therefore, I ended up with just these abstract blobs on the page, and that is what they will ever be now before I ruin it even further. I called this piece "How Not to Paint Vegetables."

 

 After the acrylic omnishambles, I had time to do a quick study with my tried-and-tested brush pen, just called "Log." Therefore, I tried to sketch out this log near their pond. Not as convincing as my flower study, but I like the marks I made to frame the negative shapes that the leaves and log were forming. Not a complete disaster in my book, but something I should have spent more time establishing the objects in that space.

Inktober- Day 23- Peeling Potato Study and Cartoon

Similar to how I did some research for my recent illustration work, I wanted to do some research for this potato film idea. So I sketched from an image to get an idea on how the hands work when doing this. Then I drew a quick cartoon just to get an idea on how it would look.

Inktober- Day 19- Realistic and Cartoon Potato

I though I needed to do some research to develop my potato characters a bit. So I did a realistic study of one, via an image search, followed a cartoon potato with a face on it. I like how the 'tuber' can be made into a nose. I wanted to use a brush pen to draw it to achieve that thick-line 'manga' look that can be easy on the eye, and easy to animate - in theory! I might need to work whether I want to apply simple shading into my film or not; as long I don't try to colour it is like that with a brush pen it could give them some dimension.

Inktober- Day 15- Character Study and Drawing

I had to add an additional character to my piece. So I managed to do a quick study from an image I did some research for the piece, then managed to quickly draw a cartoon take on that study in the pose that I needed the character to be in for the final piece - hence the censored head on the right.

Inktober- Day 14- Concept Sketch/Study

A continuation from yesterday's study for that professional project I'm working. Not as polished as my previous study, but it has given me an idea of what to implement in my final piece, and that I need to work on my overlapping and proportions when I do life drawing.

Loomis Study- Final Pretty Girl Study

This is not as bad as I first thought this was going to turn out. Although the heads looks very long, and the eyes don't seem to be positioned that well, so there is going to be room for improvement when I revisit these heads.

Loomis Study- Babies- Another Head

I've only had enough energy to draw just the one head today. I'm noticing that the head studies are starting to look consistent from one another, even thou I think I have squashed the head a little from the original drawing in the book.

I decided to give Loomis a break, and drew this from memory. It's similar to the character in the Loomis book, but a little bit more simplified to understand what is going on. I might revisit the actual head in the book another time.

Loomis Study- The Laugh

Another day, another stab at a Loomis head. The theory seems to be there, but I suppose it's when I start applying this theory into my own drawing that this will really sink in.
