Inktober- Day 16- Comic Colouring and Life Drawings.

Wow! I had a productive, and I'm liking what the marks are making that I did doing some life drawings today. The comic is for a potential paid assignment, hence the censored faces.

Inktober 2019- Day 4- Finalised(?) Censored Logo and Dr Oetker Cakes

Day 4 into my Inktober and I think I managed to finalise this logo for the client as I think the client hasn't given me any further feedback at the time of writing this blog entry. So with that professional brief out of the way... I thought I do this?
Remember when Channel 4's Great British Bake Off used to be sponsored by Dr Oetker? Well, here is an off-model attempt to recreate one of my favourites. Yeah, I should've looked at the original before doing this, but at least it was a bit of fun from some of the professional work I've been up to recently. I've also done some drawn inking, having just discussed this with an illustrator at a meetup a few weeks ago. I left it with the original pencilling because I like it.

Inktober- Day 3- Logo Redesign

I don't know if this counts as a different drawing, as I have to amend the colour scheme a bit of it. Not going to have to do much else now... but I might add some doodles to this post as I have had an exhaustive outing yesterday and it has caught up with me today. 

 I decided to upload last night's doodles on the programme note as I feel as I am not going to do too much on that logo on Day 4 than I am going to do so.

Inktober- Day 2- Logo Redesigns (Coloured, Traditional, and Initial Sketch)

Not going to get much done today, but I decided to go back to the drawing board, and resdesign this logo, so I wasn't forever revisiting the same files on a constant basis. 

Mr BoJo Tackles Brexit- Satirical Cartoon Strip

I was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend this afternoon after a weird dream in which they conjured up a cross between Mr Blobby and our current prime minister Boris Johnson. It's simple, and a bit stupid, but I guess it works well. It's been fun to do as I haven't done any kind of illustrative work in ages, so it was good to get back into that vibe of doing such work.

I have been mostly working on an art jam to depict this description: "A Volcanic Mining Facility Run by a Race of Salamander People"

Initial Sketches

 So after some research, I had an idea of what I wanted to do, so I sketched these ideas out.

After doing these pencil sketches, I had an idea of what to do for the final piece.

I decided to apply some block colouring, and also extract some pencil sketches to get some definition- this is kind of similar to what I was trying to do for an earlier piece, only without inking anything this time around. As I was also trying to extract certain drawings from certain sketches, I made myself into a conundrum about trying to achieve this for most characters, and objects, used in the piece. I also haven't had time to toy with texturing, or lighting, as I want to place down all the important elements in place. I should have some time tomorrow to do a more polished piece.

Today was doing some work towards this art jam.

I might have deviated from what a goblin looks like... but a big helpful one stuck at a back of a counter sounds about right.

I don't want to bang on about the process behind this too much, but I used a spare page in my sketch book to work out a few problems I encountered whilst doing this. These include sketches into what the girl's shoes should looked like, and how her fingers were going to look like from the back in that pose.

Post a Drawing Every Day- Day 20- Riot Police Officer and Dog Cartoon Illustration

It's been 20 days since I have participated in this group...

...and this was the best I can come up with! Original based off a loose pencil squiggle, this imaginative drawing depicts an angry riot police officer, with an angry dog. Why are they both angry? I've no idea!

When I was recommended to focus on pencil drawings, I didn't think I would be going back to colour pencils- I stumbled on two water colour pencil whilst trying to find some other pencils on my desk. And now my drawings looks like I have no concept of colouring with pencils, which seems a far cry from the digital colourings of my inked work. As this was from imagination, I had problems with drawing that dog- not really an animal person, I suppose- as I wasn't sure how that mutt was going to look like. At least I like the expression on the dog's face, even if the face looks a bit too flat for my liking. The riot police officer went okay, even thou I had no idea on how to depict his body armour.

Overall, I hopefully will be able to improve my pencilling skills, from this primitive state, in future works.

This is a block colour illustration, based on yesterday's pencil drawings.. I'm not sure whether to keep it like this, or add textures and lighting to the piece. But I'm glad how it is currently turning out for now.
The digital inking was done in a vector package, whilst the colouring, and resizing of components, were done in a bitmap package.

Post a Drawing Every Day- Day 2- From Sketch to Final Logo Design

Pencil Sketches of Logo Design

I needed to design a logo, as part of a recent scheme to promote myself as a freelance graphic designer. So I sketched out some ideas on pencil, pen, and paper. I wanted a simple design for my logo, as less is more- I also didn't have a lot of time to toy with loads of ideas- and I like the idea of using my 'stage name' to promote myself as a designer. So this explains why I went for my initials to make a stand out. I was also toying with the concept of an artist's signature - something I rarely use professionally- which explains why the initials are joined like that.

I then went into my art package of choice, and toyed around the logo design with different fonts. These were the contenders, which I thought could work as a distinctive logo.

I went for this combination, as I like the unique quality of the font for the initials, and I thought the simplicity of the font for the name would stand. I also realised that at this stage, when uploading my designs for this entry that this stood out, as the black colour for the bottom text made it easy to read when it was shrunk in a thumbnail.

Shame I had to colour the background in black, and toy with the colours for the fonts! Oh well, I then settled for a set colour...

So what have I learned from doing this? I really should check how the logo design looks at each stage, by looking at them from the various thumbnails on my browser. I have no excuse not to do so, with all of the options my browser, Vista, provides!



Oh well, I will have to wait the outcome of the first phase of the selection of the other proposals being sent to see whether I have made a dramatic mistake in my logo, or from another aspect of proposal, like my profile, has let me down. I might even get some success from doing this. So who knows...?

I recently joined a group, in which former acquaintances from my University days are attempting to keep up with whatever area of drawing you want to do (from rough to finalised digital works, for example.)

Kraftwerk Colour Study

I was inspired from the recent documentary, Synth Britannia, I wanted to do something that involved the imagery of Kraftwerk, one of the major influential acts for the British electronic music scene (Human League, Depeche Mode, et al.)

I was inspired to do something from the footage of them marching in sync. Although the perspective, overlapping, and static poses don't give that much of a marching effect.

I also haven't toyed with traditional colour in a long time. So I got out some pastels to mainly get the block colours down over the simple pencil sketch I drew.
