Day 18, and Days 20-25, Artober 2021

 

Yeah, I need to stop scanning all of these at once. Oh well, here goes... 

Today was inspired by a recent Saturday Night Live sketch of their science show parody, Science Room with Jason Sudeikis. It's worth watching as it is a prime example of things escalating out of control. 

I was another YouTuber tackling Super Mario Maker when I made this loose interpretation of Super Mario. It's a bit goofy, but that's part of its charm. 

I was watching Strictly when I shared that Teletubbies GIF of them on that special to one of my loyal friends on Facebook. Yeah... it's a bit demented, isn't it?  

During a Zoom call, I ended up drawing one of these characters for an upcoming Christmas show I'm in. At least I can look at this when I get around to writing a bio for this character. 

I wasn't feeling that inspired on this day, so just doodled these two characters. Don't think I will do much with them. 

I just stumbled on this YouTuber, Rick Beato, and I thought I try drawing this personality. Not bad. I might watch more of their videos soon. 

On this day, I was watching Venom. So I did my own interpretation of that comic book film character. 

Oh, before you ask, I did do something on Day 19, but that's on my smartphone. 

Days 8 to 14- Artober 2021 (Teddy Bear to Pink Panther)

 Yeah, I didn't plan to post all of these together, but I've had a lot going on during this week, so here we go...

Yeah, this is just a fun sketch of some teddy bear character. I might revisit this. 

On this day, I was watching a live stream of someone playing a ToeJam and Earl game, and one of the enemies was an opera singer. So here's my attempt at this character from memory.

Got inspired to draw this character from an old friend's batch of photographs taken when they were shopping for pumpkins. I quite like this character. 

Yeah, I didn't have that many art materials when I was doing this piece, hence using a highlighter rather than my trusty brush pens to draw out these characters. They make a good duo. 

Another day, and another live stream, this time they were playing that Nickeloden All-Star Brawl video game. So here's CatDog from memory. Not too bad. 

Yay! I had my brush pens back in reachable distance, so I drew this character based on a speaker I tried to watch via Zoom on Monday, which explains some of the details on this one. 

As being a fan of the Pink Panther character since I was a kid, I've never really drawn them before. This was very poignant with the passing of David H Patie doing the rounds on my Facebook feed that day. I like how this came out in the end. 

Artober 2021- Day 4- Bomb Jack

 

Well it didn't take me long to make some fan art. Just watching a streamer on Twitch playing games on Antstream, including Bomb Jack. I have fond memories of playing this in an arcade many years ago. The pose feels a bit like SuperTed or Super Mario Bros 3, but I wanted to toy with some old stationary I found whilst tidying up today. 

Artober 2021- Day 3- Blob/Splat

 I just let my imagination run riot with this one. No clear agenda, just making shapes with pencils and several ink pens. 

Artober 2021- Day 1- Rubber Hose Characters.

 I kind of got inspired by this Toontober challenge that I kept seeing on my social media feeds. The first three days were going to be the theme on Rubber Hose, so I just attempting to do some characters with some rubber hose aesthetics. The face on the dust bin cracked me up. 

The bottom picture was some earlier pencil and ink drafts before fully committing to my piece.

 I'll be honest, I wasn't feeling like doing much drawing today. So here's some out-dated appliances being unhappy. Next!

Inktober- Day 12- Not Again Cartoon

One of my professional Facebook friends shared a cartoon from Vic Kasinja's Taxina series. I was inspired by the figure in the foreground's pose, I was inspired to create my own cartoon out of it... only with a more topical topic on a contemporary telly.

Mr BoJo Tackles Brexit- Satirical Cartoon Strip

I was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend this afternoon after a weird dream in which they conjured up a cross between Mr Blobby and our current prime minister Boris Johnson. It's simple, and a bit stupid, but I guess it works well. It's been fun to do as I haven't done any kind of illustrative work in ages, so it was good to get back into that vibe of doing such work. 

The Blinddraw Challenge Drawings

Remeber that Blinddraw Challenge I did at the start of the month? Probably not, but I finally got around to scanning those drawings I did during that challenge. The first three were my initial attempts whilst I try to frame myself and my sketchbook in the confines of my bedroom. The bottom one was the one used for the video, whilst the others were sped up as an extra treat for anyone that wanted to see them.

Day 27- Inktober- Whistling Man Revisited

I decided to revisit yesterday's Whistling Man concept. I added some more into the background. It certainly got an influence of Milton Knight and Robert Crumb about it. I might revisit even more at some point.

Inktober- Day 23- Peeling Potato Study and Cartoon

Similar to how I did some research for my recent illustration work, I wanted to do some research for this potato film idea. So I sketched from an image to get an idea on how the hands work when doing this. Then I drew a quick cartoon just to get an idea on how it would look.

Inktober- Day 19- Realistic and Cartoon Potato

I though I needed to do some research to develop my potato characters a bit. So I did a realistic study of one, via an image search, followed a cartoon potato with a face on it. I like how the 'tuber' can be made into a nose. I wanted to use a brush pen to draw it to achieve that thick-line 'manga' look that can be easy on the eye, and easy to animate - in theory! I might need to work whether I want to apply simple shading into my film or not; as long I don't try to colour it is like that with a brush pen it could give them some dimension.

Inktober- Day 17- Potatoes Being Boiled Alive

You know when you have an idea that you want to put down as an image for quite a while, well this demented idea started off as a germ of a film idea I've had since attending last month's Encounters festival.
Whilst I now regret using the brush pen as part of the overall hierarchy when inking the pan, it is a pretty solid idea I want to use in this film.

Inktober- Day 15- Character Study and Drawing

I had to add an additional character to my piece. So I managed to do a quick study from an image I did some research for the piece, then managed to quickly draw a cartoon take on that study in the pose that I needed the character to be in for the final piece - hence the censored head on the right.

An Old Sketch Book... with Some New Drawn In Too!

I found this old sketch pad, the other day, and I decided to have a look in. Amongst all the notes- which date to probably my GCSE days from the French revision- there were a lot of doodles.

I do like, amongst all those cartoon heads, I was attempting to draw actual characters, like R2D2, or a villian from the PS1 game Rayman- I guess I was born to do some fan art, now and again.
So noticed that there were some pages left in the old book left. So, I did what came naturally to me.... use it up, of course!

So the top picture was really just me sploshing some paint about, as I was working on a watercolour illustration, which was based on the above 3 sketches of my face- I might get around to uploading that piece soon.

I even did some studies from the Loomis book, but I might make a proper, where this drawing came from, when I get around to doing some further scanning.

What Do You Think?- Refined 'Doodle' on Carboard

I don't normally draw on cardboard, but I ended up doodling on the front cover of my current A5 sketchbook- which I think is spelling out the obvious- and have decided to refine the lines to make this cartoon. It's okay, especially as this is the first time in drawing something of the top of my head for a few months. I should try and show you what I have been drawing inside pretty soon.

Loomis Study- Brats

As a more cartoony progression from drawing those baby heads, the next page is on brats. I think these seem to be a faithful rendition of the original heads, although I thought the lip and the tooth needed to be distinguished on the crying head.

Post a Drawing- Day 31- Studying Loomis with Another Line to the Ball

The title refers to Loomis' additional axis of lines to our face construction, which works out where the eyes and ears go on our head.

It seemed pretty straightforward, but I now want to apply to a tilted head well, rather then forcing my study to look more tilted up then it does in the book.

Post a Drawing Every Day- Day 20- Riot Police Officer and Dog Cartoon Illustration

It's been 20 days since I have participated in this group...

Cartoon Illustration

...and this was the best I can come up with! Original based off a loose pencil squiggle, this imaginative drawing depicts an angry riot police officer, with an angry dog. Why are they both angry? I've no idea!

When I was recommended to focus on pencil drawings, I didn't think I would be going back to colour pencils- I stumbled on two water colour pencil whilst trying to find some other pencils on my desk. And now my drawings looks like I have no concept of colouring with pencils, which seems a far cry from the digital colourings of my inked work. As this was from imagination, I had problems with drawing that dog- not really an animal person, I suppose- as I wasn't sure how that mutt was going to look like. At least I like the expression on the dog's face, even if the face looks a bit too flat for my liking. The riot police officer went okay, even thou I had no idea on how to depict his body armour.

Overall, I hopefully will be able to improve my pencilling skills, from this primitive state, in future works.

Post a Drawing- Day 19- Quick Pencilled Cartoon

Today's drawing is inspired from some recent feedback on my work, from an artist of superior skill and execution... although this was just a quick cartoon drawing, so some his advice hasn't been addressed yet. 

Pencilled Cartoon

It's a sort of visual metaphor for how to deal with an 'unsuccessful' medium. Despite my enthusiasm to do traditional inking, it is probably for the best that I don't attempt to ink my stuff any more, mainly as it tends to 'ruin' the pencil rough underneath. Although it does make me wonder what the hell to do with all the inking equipment- what do you do with a stash of ink pens, which you have been learning to ink with for over 5 years? I probably try and use it some how, but probably for rough work, rather then for more 'finalised' works.

This piece was very rushed, mainly as I had other things going on during the day. However, it was done from imagination, so I had no resources to help me work out the pose that the character should be in, or for the inking tools, from the ink well to various pens. 

It does make me wonder where will I end up now, with my artwork down the line. Would I find myself successful in doing pencil drawing, or will I fall back to my flawed comfort zone of inking my rough pencil work? Only future works will tell me, and probably other people's reception to them.
